Development Researcher

Pacific Science Center is seeking an experienced Development Researcher to add to its team of Development professionals. This person will manage the research program to support fundraising activities at the Science Center.

Founded at the close of the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962, Pacific Science Center is an independent not-for-profit cultural institution that annually serves more than a million children and families with engaging exhibits and educational, including outreach programs that travel to all 39 counties in Washington state through our Science on Wheels program.

Summary:
The Development Researcher manages the research program to support fundraising activities at Pacific Science Center. This employee assumes primary responsibility for meeting the prospect identification and qualification, research and tracking needs of the development team and helping them meet their fundraising goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Manages donor prospect management process: tracks prospect assignments, readiness, capacity and other relevant information; updates and maintains prospect tracking module; and tracks contact reports.
  • Builds prospect identification and qualification strategy to promote long-term major gift prospect pipeline through constituent list segmentation, electronic database screening, peer/constituency screening and rating.
  • Regularly collaborates with development staff to develop prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and overall fundraising strategies.
  • Evaluates and rates donor prospects based on known indicators of wealth and giving capacity.
  • Researches and writes quality profiles on major gift prospects, which includes relevant biographical, philanthropic and relational information.
  • Prepare development event brief bios, special focus prospect lists and other research reports.
  • Keeps up with current events, national and local news, and industry trends. Shares relevant information with development staff.
  • Provides research services and assistance to the development team and institution-wide.
  • Manages library of resources, maintains records and inventories, and recommends and acquires new research materials and resources.
  • Assists in providing orientation and training of development officers and development staff in prospect research techniques and use of development database.
  • Assists in establishing, revising and updating department policies, procedures and standards.
  • Safeguards the confidentiality of donor information at all times. Works closely with Database Manager to maintain data integrity and information/knowledge management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including 5 days/year of alternative service.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's (B.S. or B.A.) degree from an accredited four-year college or university and three to five years related experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in prospect research function including research, profiles, financial analysis and recognition of wealth indicators.
  • Ability to work independently, handle confidential information with discretion, and meet deadlines required.
  • Ability to recall, recognize and communicate interrelated information pertaining to Pacific Science Center benefactors and prospects.
  • Strong knowledge of database systems and strong computer skills using Microsoft Windows required. Experience with The Raiser's Edge is desired. Experience writing queries in a relational database is desired. Experience running and reading quantitative reports is desired.
  • Knowledge of research tools and electronic sources available through the Internet required.
  • Must maintain the professional and ethical standards set forth for the field by the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).

Page Ahead is a statewide children’s literacy non-profit providing services in 3 main areas:
  • Books for Kids:  Every year, Page Ahead distributes approximately 160,000 new age-appropriate books to 55,000 children from low-income families throughout Washington State.
  • Family Involvement:  Page Ahead offers workshops and resources for parents to help them understand the importance of reading with their children, and help them support their children’s reading efforts.
  • Community Partnership:  Page Ahead develops partnerships between volunteers, local businesses and community groups to galvanize support for children’s education at the neighborhood level.
Project:
Develop a catalog of prospective funders within specific program areas.
  • Work with Development staff to learn about Page Ahead and assess compatibility with prospective foundation and corporate funders. Research specific interests of potential corporate and foundation funders.
  • Work independently to analyze prospects and compile a report of likely funders. 
  • Assist in proposal preparation. 
  • Utilize fundraising software.
 
Qualifications:
Previous instruction in prospecting.  Internet research experience, good verbal and writing skills, Proficiency in English.

Relationship Management System Consultant - Temporary position

Primary Duties:
Act as primary systems consultant for approximately 45 front-line fundraisers, providing assistance on the use of the prospect tracking system within Advance, taking the lead on portfolio and assignment maintenance, interpreting policies and communicating policy changes. Answer questions on a daily basis via phone and email; meet in-person when appropriate for training or portfolio maintenance.

Manage Tracking inbox: field all inquiries from Advancement staff; answer questions or escalate to other RM staff as necessary

Monitor contact reports inbox; review content of all contact reports. Alert other RM staff of anomalous reports or incorrect report coding. Add prospects to Advance as needed for contact reports. Create proposal records and make proposal changes as requested, or escalate to other RM staff as necessary. Forward significant contacts to appropriate research staff.

Run PMATS system audits and correct data daily.

Complete ad-hoc data cleaning projects, as assigned by RM staff or fundraisers, including portfolio assignments and prospect record creation.

Schedule quarterly meetings for research and RM staff with fundraisers.

Compile materials for quarterly meetings, including running portfolio reports from Microsoft Access. Provide advance electronic copies for all attendees and paper copies for the meetings.

Other expectations:
Assist in the definition and development of user documentation standards and policy and procedure library maintenance.
Proactively find data discrepancies and suggest systematic cleanups

Bring up possible data issues as they arise when system changes are proposed

Assist in defining specifications for prospect tracking system requirements, including reporting and auditing
 
Requirements:
Two years’ experience with complex databases OR a Bachelor’s Degree in a job related area
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Commitment to customer service
Proven ability in handling sensitive, confidential material
Strong attention to detail
